Home Security Tips

Protecting one’s home, family and belongings is a primary concern of homeowners everywhere but installing a home security system can sometimes be costly. Here are some easy and cost-effective ways to increase home security:

Exterior lights –Lights on the outside of your home, especially ones that have motion sensors, will improve home security. When motion is detected, the lights will turn on and hopefully ward off home intruders.

Interior lights–Putting street-facing lamps on timers or using smart lightbulbs is a great way to send a signal that someone is home even if they are not. If you are away, set the timers or lightbulbs to turn on when you and your family would normally be home in the evening.

Smart locks–Smart locks are accessible by smartphone to lock or unlock your doors. Gone are the days of wondering if you locked your door on your way out of the house; with the click of a button, smart locks allow you to easily check this.

Window stops –These are small devices that can be installed on windows from the interior to keep windows from opening more than six inches. This will allow you to provide some airflow in your home without the fear of someone intruding through the window.

If you are heading out of town, ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your home. They may be kind enough to pick up your mail, newspapers and trash can so it looks like your home is occupied.
